Cornerstone Bank reported a non-performing loans ratio of 2.35% as of Q2 2026, ranking #308 of 3,642 U.S. banks (92nd percentile). That is up 1.54 percentage points from 0.81% a year earlier, and above the 0.52% median of the 874 Large Community Banks ($1B–$10B in assets). What is the Non-Performing Loans Ratio?

A non-performing loan (NPL) is a loan whose borrower has stopped paying as agreed: the bank has put it on nonaccrual because full collection is doubtful, or it is 90 or more days past due. The NPL ratio divides those loans by total loans. Regulators call them noncurrent loans.

Compare the NPL ratio with the allowance for credit losses: an allowance smaller than the NPL balance leaves less room for losses on loans already in trouble. Then find which loan type is driving it, because a jump in construction or office loans means more than one in guaranteed loans. A single large commercial loan can move a small bank's ratio by a full percentage point, so read the trend over several quarters.
