Methodology

Where the data comes from and how to check it.

Every figure on BankRegReports comes from a public regulatory filing. We standardize those filings so they can be screened, ranked and compared. We do not estimate the underlying financial data, and the regulator's filing remains the source of record. If a figure here ever differs from the filing, the filing is right.

Sources by regulator and form

  • FFIEC (ffiec.gov): bank Call Reports (forms FFIEC 031, 041 and 051) and the Uniform Bank Performance Report (UBPR).
  • FDIC (fdic.gov): the institution directory, branch locations and bank failure history.
  • NCUA (ncua.gov): credit union Call Reports (form 5300).
  • Federal Reserve (federalreserve.gov): bank holding company financials (form FR Y-9C) and holding company structure.

Each bank page links to that institution's record at the FDIC and the FFIEC so you can compare a figure with the filing. Coverage is U.S. institutions only. See data coverage for what is loaded and how far back it runs.

Update cadence

Banks file Call Reports within 30 days of quarter-end (35 days for banks with more than one foreign office), the FFIEC posts the bulk files about 45 days after quarter-end, and BankRegReports loads each quarter by the middle of the second month after it closes, for example Q1 by mid-May.

Banks can amend a filing after they submit it. Amended values appear after a later load, so for a filing amended in the last few days, check the regulator's own site. The Call Report filing schedule lists the due dates, and data updates shows the quarter currently loaded and when the pipeline last ran.

How metrics are named

We use the regulator's own name where one exists, such as CET1 ratio, Tier 1 leverage ratio and net interest margin, and the common industry name where it does not, such as Texas ratio. Every metric has an entry in the glossary with its formula, the call report schedule it comes from, the reference bands analysts use and sources.

Reference bands are not regulatory ratings. Composite scores, screens and safety summaries are our own analysis of public ratios. CAMELS ratings are confidential to the regulators and are never published here.

How missing data is shown

A dash (—) means a value was not reported or does not apply to that bank for that quarter. We never show a missing value as zero. A zero appears only when the filing reports a zero. Smaller banks, for example, do not file some schedules, so those lines are blank for them.

Corrections

If a number looks wrong, tell us. Send the bank, the metric, the quarter, the value you see here and the value in the regulator's filing. We compare it with the filing. When the difference comes from our processing, we correct it. When the filing itself was amended or contains an error, the data follows the regulator's version.

Report an error through the contact form (choose "Report a data error") or email support@bankregreports.com. Security vulnerabilities go to security@bankregreports.com instead; see security.
