What is the Return on Assets?

Return on assets (ROA) is a bank's annualized net income divided by its average total assets, expressed as a percentage. It shows how much profit the bank earns on each dollar of its balance sheet, whatever its size or capital structure.

Read ROA against peers of the same size and business model, then check what is driving it. A high ROA from a wide net interest margin is more durable than one lifted by a one-time securities gain or a release of loan loss reserves. Subchapter S banks pay no income tax at the bank level, so their after-tax ROA runs higher than a C corporation bank with the same pretax earnings; compare them on pretax ROA. A bank with heavy trust or fee businesses can post a high ROA on a small balance sheet.
