Definition

Includes all loans, whatever the purpose, secured primarily by real estate as evidenced by mortgages, deeds of trust, land contracts, or other instruments, whether first or junior liens (e.g., equity loans, second mortgages) on real estate. Includes all such loans whether originated by the bank or purchased from another party. Excludes, however, all loans indirectly representing real estate as defined under 'Other Real Estate Owned (2150)'. The special treatment of private (i.e., nongovernment-issued or guaranteed) certificates of participation in pools of residential mortgages are: (1) If the reporting bank has issued certificates of participation in a pool of residential mortgages it holds and retains significant risk of ownership, such transactions are to be reported as financing transactions, i.e., as borrowings. In these cases, the underlying mortgage loans must continue to be included in this item and the proceeds of the sale of the certificates of participation must be reported in 'Other Borrowed Money (2850)', and (2) if the reporting bank has issued certificates of participation in a pool of residential mortgages it holds and does not retain significant risk of ownership, such transactions are to be reported as a sale of the underlying mortgages. Holdings of such certificates of participation are included in 'All Holdings of Private (i.e., Nongovernment-Issued or Guaranteed) Certificates of Participation in Pools of Residential Mortgages: Book Value (0408)'. Also includes loans secured by properties and guaranteed by governmental entities in foreign countries. Excludes obligations (other than securities) of states and political subdivisions in the U.S. secured by real estate (included in item 2107) and loans to real estate companies, real estate investment trusts, mortgage lenders, and foreign nongovernmental entities that specialize in mortgage loan originations and that service mortgages for other lending institutions when the real estate mortgages or similar liens on real estate are not sold to the bank but are merely pledged as collateral (reported in item 1489 or in item 1563 as appropriate). Includes loans primarily secured by residential properties (both farm and nonfarm) that are guaranteed by the Farmers Home Administration. However, excludes both notes insured by the Farmers Home Administration and instruments (certificates of beneficial ownership, insured note insurance contracts) representing an interest in Farmers Home Administration insured notes. Such notes and instruments are included in 'U.S. Government Agencies and Corporations Obligations (0600)'. The purchase of mortgage-backed securities is classified as the purchase of the real estate loans underlying those securities and thus included here. Excludes pooled mortgages against where certificates guaranteed by the Government National Mortgage Association have been issued. The issuing bank treats these pooled mortgages as having been sold outright and the purchasing bank treats the certificates as 'U.S. Government Agencies and Corporations Obligations (0600)'. (Note: This item includes the sum of items 1415, 1420, 1430, 1460 and 1480 on Schedule RC-C.)
