Loan Sale Prospects: US Banks with Rising Nonaccrual Loans by Portfolio

A bank whose nonaccrual loans are rising in one portfolio is the bank most likely to sell loans, hire a workout or collections firm, or bring in a consultant. This screen lists every FDIC-insured US bank whose nonaccrual rate in the chosen portfolio is higher than it was in the same quarter a year earlier, ranked by the current rate, with the dollar amount on nonaccrual and the 30 to 89 day and 90 day past due rates beside it. Pick a portfolio below. The list is drawn from public call report filings and is not a statement that any bank is selling loans.

Data as of Q2 2026 call reports. Ranked highest first; closed charters are excluded. Only banks whose rate is higher than in Q2 2025 are listed. Across the 10 ranked banks, the median Credit cards: Nonaccrual Rate is 1.08%, and 1 have more than 3% of the portfolio on nonaccrual. Next update: Q3 2026 Call Reports are due October 30, 2026; we expect them on the platform by mid-November 2026.

Methodology

Ranks every active FDIC-insured bank with total assets of at least $100 million that filed the quarter shown and the same quarter a year earlier, whose nonaccrual rate in the chosen portfolio is higher now than then, and that hold at least $500,000 of nonaccrual loans in that portfolio, so a single small loan in a tiny book does not lead the list. Refreshed quarterly. Banks file Call Reports within 30 days of quarter-end (35 days for banks with more than one foreign office), the FFIEC posts the bulk files about 45 days after quarter-end, and BankRegReports loads each quarter by the middle of the second month after it closes, for example Q1 by mid-May.

Source authority: FFIEC Call Report Schedule RC-N (past due and nonaccrual loans): column A (30 to 89 days past due), column B (90 days and over, still accruing) and column C (nonaccrual), each divided by the same portfolio's loans on Schedule RC-C. The year-earlier value is the same bank's filing for the same quarter one year before.

Frequently asked

Why does a rising nonaccrual rate point to a loan sale?

Nonaccrual loans earn no interest, carry a higher allowance and draw examiner attention. When they build up in one portfolio, a bank's usual options are to work the loans out, foreclose, or sell them, often as a pool of nonperforming notes. A rising rate is a reason to call, not proof that a sale is planned.

Why compare with a year earlier and not the prior quarter?

Some portfolios are seasonal. Farm loans and credit cards move with the calendar, so a quarter-on-quarter change can be a season rather than a trend. Comparing the same quarter a year apart removes that.

What is the difference between past due and nonaccrual?

A loan 30 to 89 days past due is late but still accruing interest. At 90 days a loan is either still accruing because it is well secured and being collected, or it is placed on nonaccrual. Loans usually move through those stages a quarter or two apart, so a rising 30 to 89 day rate often comes before a rising nonaccrual rate.
