OREO Prospects: US Banks Holding Other Real Estate Owned
Other real estate owned (OREO) is property a bank has taken through foreclosure or a deed in lieu and holds for sale. Banks do not want to keep it: it earns nothing, costs money to carry and draws examiner attention, so a bank with a large OREO book is a natural prospect for property buyers, brokers, auction firms and asset managers. This screen ranks every FDIC-insured US bank that holds any OREO by the amount it holds, with its nonaccrual loans beside it, since today's nonaccrual loans are the OREO of the next few quarters.
Data as of Q2 2026 call reports. Ranked highest first; closed charters are excluded. Across the 1,323 ranked banks, the median Other Real Estate Owned is $616K, and 179 hold more than $5 million of OREO. Next update: Q3 2026 Call Reports are due October 30, 2026; we expect them on the platform by mid-November 2026.

Methodology
Ranks the most recent FFIEC call report filing for every active FDIC-insured bank with total assets of at least $100 million that reports other real estate owned above zero. Refreshed quarterly. Banks file Call Reports within 30 days of quarter-end (35 days for banks with more than one foreign office), the FFIEC posts the bulk files about 45 days after quarter-end, and BankRegReports loads each quarter by the middle of the second month after it closes, for example Q1 by mid-May.
Source authority: FFIEC Call Report Schedule RC, item 7 (other real estate owned, RCON2150 or RCFD2150), detailed by property type on Schedule RC-M item 3. Nonaccrual loans are Schedule RC-N column C. Balances are in thousands of dollars as filed.
Frequently asked
What is OREO on a bank balance sheet?
Other real estate owned is real estate a bank has acquired through foreclosure, a deed in lieu of foreclosure or a similar route, and holds for sale. It is reported on Schedule RC of the call report and is one piece of nonperforming assets, alongside nonaccrual loans.
How long can a bank hold OREO?
National banks and federal savings associations generally must dispose of OREO within five years, with possible extensions of up to five more years with OCC approval. State rules vary. The holding limit is one reason banks sell OREO rather than wait for prices to recover.
Does a bank on this list want to sell property?
Not necessarily. The list shows what each bank reported holding at the quarter end. Some of it may already be under contract. It tells you which banks to contact, not what any bank intends to do.
